Friendly, but a bit all over the place

Pros

Many of the people here are thoughtful, talented, and smart. Everyone's input is valued and intellectual debates are common. The company as a whole values its employees a lot and there is a lot of respect among employees. Some of the ideas coming out of this place are amazing and once strengthened in the right ways, they can be pretty monumental.

Cons

A lot of people are taking on roles that might not be their best fit, and the company as a whole is still learning how to navigate tech and economics. You have people from a variety of backgrounds trying to tackle problems when it may be easier to consult or hire experts in those areas. An earlier review by a former employee said there was "lots of chaos," which is pretty true. There are also a lot of projects going at once and plans are always changing, but not always in a way that seems structured and mindful. It's an "interdisciplinary" and "innovative" environment, which really means there are a lot of non-technical people trying or pretending to understand technical matters. The strength of this is that you can look at things from a different perspective, but weaknesses emerge when you have people in charge of projects that they don't fully understand or people needing time to acquire the skill set to actually carry out their projects. Some interns were more satisfied with their experience than others, and it really depended on the leadership of their group and the projects they worked on. It seems like the company as a whole is trying to make their ideas applicable, but external validation of those ideas is less solid than they should be. Working here means you live daily with the feeling that in the long run, things aren't sustainable if they stay the way they are now.

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on your experience. Given that this is an anonymous review, we can only assume that this was referring to our more experimental summer internship, where we attempted to create an internship that merged the technical and theoretical, both in staffing and in assigned work. While we learned a lot from setting up the team this way, we are a small company and we realize that we stretched our technical capabilities a little too thin during this program, leaving certain projects unsupported. Moving forward, all of our technical internship programs are designed and staffed to provide full technical support to all projects. To past and future interns, it’s important to us that everyone has the best possible internship experience, and that each person has an opportunity to contribute something unique. Our company is small and everyone is invested in the internship because a lot of great ideas are created there! Thank you again for your feedback.

You might learn soft skills, but lots of chaos

Pros

This is a very employee driven environment -- if you have ideas and want to put them into practice, you can find a space to do a lot of exciting work. The teams are dynamic and open to change, young office, creative space.

Cons

The office feels like chaos somewhat often. There is limited leadership (it is an office that tries to be "flat" but isn't in practice, which can be very confusing). The goals for projects change frequently and sometimes without a lot of clarity. The work is mostly theoretical, this does not appeal to everyone. Managers are very limited in experiences, often don't take feedback particularly well or implement it. Some employees have more limited experience with research than others. If you want to learn research skills or hard skills, you will need to do that on your own time.
