Pros

Cool building. Exposure to the arts.

Cons

No training program or curriculum for management. Work is dumped on new employees and no quality checks or mentoring. A lot of finger pointing when it isn't needed. Feedback = Beratement Everyone wants to look good for the Director even at the expense of others and their jobs. Inexperienced senior management when it comes to fact finding and people management.

Beautiful music, terrible managers.

Pros

Some of the people here have been working for a long time, and are very dedicated, talented, and wonderful people. They make coming to work every day worth it. The performances are absolutely wonderful and an honor to be a part of. The theater is grand, the music is enchanting.

Cons

The upper level management team is very much an 'old boys club'. Basically if you are not a white male, you will not be treated as well. So many women have left the development team and other departments, and they all say the same thing. CEO insists HGO is a family, but acts very differently behind closed doors and away form donors. We have watched many, many people leave in the last few years for all of the same reason. Poor leadership, poor communication, poor work culture. While some people can do no wrong, some are treated very disrespectfully. You are told to speak up, but it goes no where.

Pros

Talented, dedicated, mission-driven, mostly friendly colleagues; convenient downtown location; proximity to other arts organizations; quality of product

Cons

Small hope of advancement; entrenched, rigid senior management; unclear policies and insufficiently documented procedures mean you're always making mistakes and making someone angry; training in byzantine procedures and tech tools is completely inadequate; departments meet incessantly yet remain siloed and unwilling to work cooperatively.
