Pros

Gro is positioned in a high-growth, recession-proof industry with no shortage of potential business. The company has generous salaries well above market averages. Not great benefits though. Sara is a knowledgeable and passionate CEO who is well-respected in the space, often giving speeches and interviews. Many employees are very intelligent and dedicated to the cause.

Cons

Collectively, everyone is getting burnt out and many are leaving the company. There is no cohesive plan, and continually we rush to meet unreasonable deadlines to build lackluster products full of problems. All the new employees don’t seem to know anything about the industry but are in decision-making positions. How can they design, build, or sell quality products if they don’t know the customers and what they want? There’s almost never promotions, and no 401k matching or bonuses. There are blurry lines around people’s roles, so you’re often asked to do work outside the scope of your original job description. This would be fine, except that work is rarely recognized with more than a “good job.” And if you give an inch, they take a mile. Do 1 extra task and suddenly you’re responsible for 20. When I started at Gro it was the best job. Everyone was so kind, we worked well together, and things got done. Now it feels like chaos and everyone is so passive aggressive due to being stressed and burnt out.

Pros

Gro has a lot of really great people that are really smart. I have made incredible friends and really enjoyed the people I worked with.

Cons

Viewing the organization externally, Sara (the CEO) gives the appearance as though the company is really successful but that can't be further from the truth. Leadership micromanages everything, which prevents projects from getting done. It's created a fearful culture for taking any authority to push a project forward. There are many products that are developed for getting a singular deal done, but are not something that can be repeated for other customers. Anything that could become repeatable revenue gets derailed anytime a major project comes up. There is no transparency across the organization of who customers even are (to the point of having code names for some, which seems highly unnecessary). Up until about a year ago, teams were making things just to make things and didn't have any specific customer in mind. The organization is still trying to sell those random products that don't solve customer problems. The current head of sales doesn't even understand the product well enough to sell it himself (and he's been in the role for almost a year). On top of this, many people are leaving. Promotions and raises are rare, even for the people that do the most work in the organization. You'll be told to be patient for months after your performance evaluation. You'll be given arbitrary "rules" the company has on raises (like employees need to be here for at least a year). HR keeps promotion/raise conversations within their team without input from managers or employees (outside of reviews). The company is on a path to nowhere. While yes, the CEO is extremely influential and has the right circles of leaders to push her message, it is clear to anyone who actually has to use the products Gro sells that it is extremely far from solving customer issues. I do not see how this company will ever be profitable with leadership as it stands.

Fall in line or you’re a target

Pros

This company is an amazing value proposition. They are doing exciting and unique work in the agricultural industry; not a small feat considering their NYC location.

Cons

Sara and Sewit do not allow dissent. The company culture demands that you fall in line, regardless of what you feel is in the best interest of the company. They will demand a certain personality type as well, and if you do not conform they will shut you out of projects and do anything possible to scapegoat you ahead of ultimate removal. Maybe this stems from the rigidity of the financial services industry, but it has no place in a healthy startup.
