Pros

There were cool and smart people...who’ve pretty much all but left the agency either on their own or were let go by the fire happy management. Greg the prez has a cool personality though and learns peoples names though he barely knows what’s going on media wise.

Cons

I’m surprised there’s so little reviews...maybe people just want to move on and forget about their time at this agency that’s barely hanging on. There used to be really cool and smart people, agency events, etc. Most of what’s left now are people that are too comfortable to leave and take the leap for better opportunities or are stuck given the unpredictable climate. Devolution of culture and rounds of layoffs over the last year or two was sad to experience. Pretty much just hires interns now to train them up so they don’t have to shell out for more senior people who may influence the agency’s “culture” or lack there of (happened before and people left in droves as a result). Not as innovative with access to most recent tech and processes are really manual...they still use Excel for a lot of things. Used to be some marquee-ish clients but Cage Point, founded by one of the prior founders of this agency, will continue to pick out prior clients one by one. If NYU or American Red Cross leave good luck to this agency’s existence.

Greg here, thanks for the feedback and insight. Wish you didn't feel the way you do as you sound (from a professional development POV) frustrated. The items in the post above feels disconnected to the client survey data we receive every 90 days (and that i share out to our team). Our weekly Town Halls, weekly newsletters are meant to update and share latest developments with account status, new biz pipeline, and so on. Generator University is a deliberate program to further train/grow staff. I think the clients we keep NYU, Penn State, American Red Cross, Barry's Boot Camp, KOA, Miele, Mutti, Symple Loans and others have come to look at us as partners. Honestly, if you're in fact a current employee (as this post indicates) I'd encourage you to speak with our outsourced HR leaders, Lisa to get this off your chest and potentially together create some positive impact. As you know my door is always open and I hope you'd reach out for a conversation. Thanks.. Greg

Pros

Good perks, snacks, transportation reimbursement, etc.

Cons

The company is disorganized. There is no existing structure in place and employees are expected to just figure it out. Various teams are very separated, there's no transparency and/or intercommunication and we often have no idea what other teams are working on so there's often a disconnect and doesn't make it feel like we're part of this overall company community. Upper management tends to be unsupportive and often stifles new ways of thinking. The company tend to also spoil its clients, making the employees work more than necessary and are often more on the side of the client than its own employees.

Pros

Coming to this agency, I was drawn to the amount of talent, the commitment to clients and their business (these folks REALLY care), and the overall nature of the teams. I have worked at a number of agencies where its the same song-and-dance and cookie cutter approaches across clients, Generator has some incredibly experienced and innovative staff that, even 11 years in the industry, I am still learning from. It's exciting. We have really good relationships with our partners that allow us to test and innovate with our clients, this is honestly not a priority in a lot of other media shops. The teams are also really great to work with. COVID threw a lot of wrenches in a lot of gears and to be honest I feel that Generator did an outstanding job. We have a pretty good cloud-based set up that lets us all work from wherever, seeing other Generators from all over the country over video conference often is nice too. They also worked with me to get all of the equipment I needed, a couple monitors, and even a really nice office chair since my kitchen chair was getting really uncomfortable really fast. Those are some small examples, but it shows how much they care about their employees. Agency culture is also really important to me, we do the typical virtual happy hours, and get-togethers, but we just started doing some health/fitness tracking competitions which I am really loving, gets me motivated to get out and move....COVID has added some unwanted pounds. We have also brought in a few new clients over the past months, that is always an exciting time to brainstorm and get together with my teammates. Overall, I feel that I can do great work here, continue to grow in my practice and exposure to innovative media, and feel that I work for an agency that not only cares about my wellbeing but also is entrenched in the success of our clients as well. Hard to find.

Cons

I don't think that this is really a con because this is typical agency life and if you've worked at an agency before you can understand this: work gets very busy sometimes. Sometimes there are really late nights trying to get projects out, or you're running at a sprint to get some things out the door. BUT there are other times that I've marked all of the things I wanted to get done that day by 3pm and I call up my team and have a beer. Again, its agency life........I, personally, like it.

Hello from Agency President, Greg here! First let me say, thank you for taking time to post a review to Glassdoor. With how busy everyone is in general (and at our shop) I appreciate the thoughtfulness of both the Pros and Cons. Thanks for the advice you noted as well. The fully remote life we've all found ourselves (since March) has been easier for some than others; however, it's with great excitement that I can share we renewed our lease in NYC and plan for a re-opening when the health and policy leaders say it's safe. As always, my "door" is always open. Greg
