Pros

-free food -the peers on your team are some of the best minds around in tech -flexible with PTO/sick time -modern office space -trendy location

Cons

-favoritism is running rampant in engineering, although being reported to HR -there are members of engineering who have almost 10 years of experience that are being paid less than newer folks coming in with half that experience - people are "iced" out of their jobs using negativity and black balling - inappropriate feedback given to peers about your work -in-actionable feedback during the review period -toxic 'cliquish' culture - review for employees is negatively focused; almost no wins are celebrated, with an emphasis on mistakes that are brought up after the fact with no way to course correct or to grow - no room for promotion - immature leadership in engineering - offering up others positions behind their back

Extremely smart people, but no stability and unclear outlook

Pros

- Some of the smartest people I've ever worked with - Exciting product ideas - Some products/offerings are seeing strong demand. CRO/analytics business may be salvageable. - Comp is still obnoxiously high, even if a bunch of benefits did get cut. For the low amount of social value you contribute working at Flatiron, the money is honestly vastly more than deserved, and for some roles higher than at competitors.

Cons

- Increasingly bleak business outlook, multiple rounds of layoffs. It was good that they got rid of some directors / leadership who weren't doing much, but they also gutted teams and lost great talent. - Also bleeding talent and institutional knowledge because of attrition. - Despite layoffs, seemingly lower standards to get hired into some teams (that are growing but hiring only in Raleigh). - Constant reorgs over last 2 years made it really difficult to focus on work. Leadership didn't appreciate negative impacts; kept hiring people to reorg over and over again. - Increasing lack of trust in leadership. - On some teams, backstabbing and favoritism (but overall people are kind)

Not so great

Pros

* Flatiron has amazing talent. Was lucky enough to work alongside some very smart, driven, kind people. * The office has great perks; loads of snacks, drinks, fancy coffee machines, free lunches which come in handy since taking a lunch break isn't common. * The mission behind Flatiron keeps a lot of people motivated even when they feel burnt out. * Wonderful individual health benefits, not as strong for dependents/families * Central office location, easy subway access for commuters

Cons

* Some departments can be very cliquey, unapproachable, and secretive. Office politics and favoritism run rampant. * People are there one day and disappear the next which adds a level of fear for job security. * If you aren't putting in 12 hour days or try to leave at a reasonable hour people will think you aren't "going above and beyond." Not the most sustainable environment if you have a family. There is a big drinking culture which makes you feel like you need to stay even later to put in face in order to be a part of the team. * Like some others have mentioned, Ivy pedigree is given more clout than it should and those without it can feel looked down upon. * It's common for managers to have no training or experience which can have a really negative impact. Training shouldn't be an option or afterthought but a prerequisite. * More talk and planning than action in a lot of areas

The aggregate review scores are not encouraging, and there is a reason for it

Pros

- Cancer can come for any of us, and you get to have an impact on both cancer research and clinical cancer treatment via an EHR system - Salary and bonuses for some positions can be attractive, but ultimately fleeting, leaving ash in one's mouth - Flexible PTO - Not much else, as other pros and benefits have disappeared or faded into the ether

Cons

- Systemic two-faced culture, with a helping of "lying to your face, and doubling down no matter the evidence presented to refute the lie" - Claims to care about employees, but never demonstrates how much they care, while undermining employee well-being at every turn - HR at Flatiron will convince you that the most caustic HR department is superb; avoid any interactions with them and have an attorney on retainer - Insecure management that lacks professionalism, blames others for their own failings, cannot stand fair criticism, and tends to verbally assail employees - Despite the other reviews, a non-negligible amount of coworkers are unpleasant; however, there are some gems... at least until they leave - Favoritism is a rampant issue, and being outside a manager's "circle of friends" is dubious at best; prepare for schoolyard antics - Projection is de rigueur, a phenomenon that would keep the most experienced psychologist transfixed in disbelief for years to come - An overall company trajectory that calls into question the future of the company, and layoffs (silent or overt) are a consistent concern - Oodles of attrition with spectacular consistency the past several years, leading to institutional amnesia - Pervasive amnesia among employees that conveniently absolves them of any responsibility, or enables them to transfer blame to another

Pros

- Brilliant, hardworking, friendly colleagues - Very progressive and accepting work culture - Depending on your department, room for advancement

Cons

- Pretend to be "pro mental health," but in reality they could care less - Two-faced management - Expect favoritism to be common - HR is shady... do NOT trust them - Management will happily blame you for things that are not your fault (and actually THEIR fault) to save face - Profits over people... "oopsie, we're restructuring again for the 1,000,000th time bc bizness, looks like there's gonna be layoffs..."
