Pros

The pay arrived on time. The role helped develop certain skills.

Cons

Decision-making is slow and overly bureaucratic. Innovation and new ideas are often resisted. Staff feedback is collected but rarely acted upon. Communication between senior leadership and frontline staff is poor. High-performing staff are not recognised or rewarded. Career progression opportunities are limited. Responsibilities are frequently unclear or overlap between roles. Organisational priorities change regularly, creating uncertainty. Resources are stretched, making it difficult to deliver quality services. Staff morale is low across multiple teams. Training is inconsistent or insufficient. There is a disconnect between the organisation’s public messaging and the day-to-day reality experienced by staff. Poor performers are not effectively managed, creating frustration for those who are performing well. Excessive meetings reduce time available for meaningful work. Frontline expertise is overlooked in favour of top-down decision making. The organisation feels overly hierarchical, with significant decision-making concentrated at senior levels and limited autonomy for middle managers and frontline staff. There appears to be a culture of micromanagement in some areas, which can make it difficult for staff to take ownership of their work and develop professionally. Management quality is inconsistent. Some managers are highly supportive and capable, while others struggle to empower staff or effectively lead teams. Staff turnover is high, which impacts continuity and morale. The organisation often appears to be addressing the same issues repeatedly rather than making sustained long-term progress. There is a noticeable gap between the organisation’s stated values and their practical implementation. Communication between trustees, senior leadership and operational staff can feel disconnected. Greater challenge, scrutiny and accountability at board level would help strengthen governance and organisational performance. The culture is cliquey, with some staff feeling included while others feel overlooked, unsupported or pushed out. Long-term strategic planning appears weak, with priorities changing frequently and a focus on short-term responses rather than sustainable development. Workplace facilities and compliance standards, including workstation provision, health and safety considerations and suitable working environments, could be improved. Complete lack of risk assessments for any event, fundraising structure or teams. Service delivery can feel cyclical, with some service users repeatedly leaving and returning to services without any real evidence of lasting positive outcomes. Drug and substance misuse issues among the client group create significant challenges for staff, yet there can be a perception that the organisation lacks a sufficiently robust long-term approach to addressing these challenges. Drugs are everywhere despite clear rules against it within the service.
