Pros

It’s challenging to put into words how little I recommend working here. I was warned by many to not accept the West End offer - including former and current employees. However I was fooled into believing the CEO, when he went on about positive change during my interview. The truth is, the lack of business structure at this firm will be the reason it inevitably fails. In 2024, WEST experienced a mass exit of almost all their lower level employees. They pivoted into mass hiring, and I remember starting and feeling excited about the potential for positive growth. And a year later, laid off a quarter of their staff

Cons

There is NO diversity here either.

Pros

The team here is deeply invested in both the success of its clients and the well-being of its employees. My colleagues are incredibly kind and collaborative, always willing to lend a hand or share their expertise. The work is meaningful, with clients tackling some of today’s most pressing issues, including human rights, environmental sustainability, and criminal justice reform. Helping to elevate our clients' voices and shape public conversations around these topics makes the work both challenging and rewarding. The firm has made a concerted effort to improve the culture, fostering an environment where employees feel valued and supported. Leadership is responsive to feedback and actively works with all members of the team to create a rewarding work experience where wins are celebrated. This effort has been tremendously successful in my view, and the culture in the DC office is extremely positive.

Cons

Securing earned media can be challenging and stressful, especially as newsrooms continue to shrink. The fast-paced nature of the industry often requires flexibility, including occasional long hours or work on nights and weekends. However, these challenges are inherent to the communications profession as a whole and not unique to West End Strategy Team.

Pros

Junior co-workers were trauma-bonded which facilitated friendship.

Cons

The company had a very low retention rate, especially among people of color. Most senior leadership were the longest-tenured employees and all white. Budget constraints were consistently raised across teams, often limiting morale. Folks were given false promises around formal reviews and growth opportunities. There is also a strong culture of favoritism that has impacted team dynamics and opportunities. Even though the company has been around for 10+ years, the environment still felt like a startup, with major operational changes, including binary-level tracking, rolled out without proper training, documentation, or clear processes. The CEO also maintains a culture of surveillance over teams, which often creates a lack of trust and unnecessary stress. In some cases, client missions and priorities directly contradicted each other, creating confusion and questioning morals.
