Pros
--Excellent Work Culture: I think one of my favorite parts of this job is the people I work with. There's a lot of mutual support; we're all ambitious, but there's no sense of 'cutthroat competition' (which can be common elsewhere in NYC). This allowed me to learn quickly on the job and adapt to new, unfamiliar tasks. The atmosphere is also pretty social, but without the pressure to conform (which is also nice if you tend to be a bit shy or introverted).
--Variety within Role: This might be a drawback if you're looking for a more standardized position with set responsibilities. However, this is by far a plus if you're intensely curious or get bored of a typical day-to-day grind. This is true regardless of your title–we all write blogs, manage verticals, communicate with the press, and work on complex studies. There's also a mix across the week, so you're not stuck in a rut or limited to one scheduled area. That being said, this is a job that requires quick learning and flexibility. You'll need a sense of personal drive to keep up.
--Initiative is Welcome: Personally, I've always been the type that likes to challenge rules–fortunately, this company expects and relies on that kind of attitude. If you have an idea, you're encouraged to share it, and once you've laid out a plan chances are it will be tested out. Somewhat importantly, your initiatives won't be whisked away for someone in a higher position to take care of. You'll get to drive the effort and manage it yourself. It's great for learning, but also for building up confidence and feeling like you can make a real difference in the company.
--Perks: The perks are awesome. Free Seamless lunches daily, gym memberships, covered healthcare and dental, snacks, outings, and of course all the extra benefits that come just from working at a WeWork.
Cons
As mentioned, this company isn't for everyone. It requires personal drive and ambition, the ability to rapidly learn and adapt, and a cooperative personality that puts the entire company before personal wins. This is a small company, so you'll need to feel comfortable working up-close-and-personal with peers.
In a similar vein, working at a small, cooperative start-up can also mean unclear paths for individual career progression. Unlike other companies, there's no list with check boxes that lead to a big promotion or title change. That being said, the company is quite fair; it's just a difference in structure you might not be used to.
