Pros

The best part of working at Utah State University is for the most part schedules are very flexible. Utah State offers a variety of positions. The benefits package is pretty good, I think this is to make up for lower salaries. Cache Valley is a beautiful area and draws in people and provides all year round recreation.

Cons

Low pay compared to other parts of nation. The turnover rate is very low, salaried positions do not open up very often and as such advancement opportunities do not present themselves as often as in other sectors. Some inter-departmental politics need to be eliminated.

Pros

Academia is a more relaxed atmosphere than a for profit business. Most of the people I work with are very kind. And the summers are amazingly quiet.

Cons

The pay is very low. My position was just created and the base pay is $50k. However, the raises here only come if you leave your position and move to a different division within the university. It is commonly said that if you want a raise or a promotion you have to go somewhere else.
