Pros
This is a pretty good place to learn if you're willing to put in the effort, totally fine if you're not, but be aware that just because you put in the time and effort doesn't mean you'll be rewarded for it. Why is this a good place to learn? The product is fine, I guess, if you have strong feelings software catered to consumer packaged goods companies! I'd suggest reevaluating your life choices if you do, but that's just me. But the main reason is that there's a lot of employee turnover without replacement for said employees. This means that extra responsibilities get thrown your way (without a pay raise or promotion), so if you're inexperienced this is actually a really good avenue for learning new things! Now, why is there a lot of employee turnover? Read in the next section! Might be worth mentioning that even though it's a good opportunity to learn, this is still a tiny company that no one knows about so when interviewing for new jobs it's not helpful. Plus, CPG information is not helpful unless you're looking to stay in the industry.
Cons
The more you interact with the CEO, the worse your time at UpClear will be. If you can manage to avoid them, then maybe it can be considered bearable. You're asked to go into the office 3-4 days a week and the atmosphere is... something. Nearly every morning, you will be serenaded with the sounds of the CEO (and sometimes one of the product managers) berating the Paris team in French. C'est la vie! Then comes lunch, which honestly isn't bad! Your co-workers are generally extremely chill and easy to talk to. After lunch is the afternoon, a time that you'd hope is filled with peace and potentially silence. Au contraire, mon ami! There's, you guessed it: more berating, but this time it's in English! Why is there so much berating? The CEO has a massive control issue and poor emotional regulation and this is exceedingly clear when you realize that he is still dealing with day-to-day operational issues at the company. Instead of doing what a CEO should do, which is prioritizing the long-term vision and goals of this company, he's stuck fixating and micromanaging inconsequential tasks. If you're interviewing, try and connect with someone that isn't so senior at the company and just ask them what working at Upclear is actually like. Finally, here are a few roles at UpClear you should definitely avoid no matter how junior you are: 1. Product team is essentially the CEO's punching bag and you will be dealing with him on a day-to-day basis 2. Marketing team is run by a very two-faced senior employee (Kurt) 3. Delivery is where people who are on H1B1 visas get sequestered to and judging from my interactions with them, they're completely and utterly trapped. It's the worst job at the company because part of the reason UpClear actually sells well is because the delivery is "free", this makes the delivery team the punching bag of the clients and upper management.
