Pros

Generous time off/sick day policy (for both physical/mental health) with generally no questions asked. Remote friendly, though they recently just reopened their Vancouver office if you prefer to work onsite. Lots of ongoing DEI/JEDI workshops from a third party consulting agency on company time. They'll often reimburse you if you'd like to buy lunch for yourself. Genuine commitment to social justice and equity for everyone. Great benefits, including a vacation bonus and health/wellness budget. Go on a nice vacation, keep receipts, get reimbursed. Buy things that contribute to your health, keep receipts, get reimbursed. At the time of my employment they also had an unlimited book budget for buying learning materials for yourself. Lovely culture amongst immediate teams. Many employees stick around because they love what they do and the people they work with. Some really fun holiday parties. Great/above average extended health insurance.

Cons

The company just laid of 20% of its workforce as of August 2022. Current President (Felicia) has the best of intentions and genuinely wants things to turn around, however leadership in general is all over the place right now. This was just my experience - but whether the company realizes it or not (trying to give the benefit of the doubt) favoritism often comes into play with promotions. Consistency and tenure contributes very little to career growth. It isn't enough just to do your job well day to day. If you want to move up, expect to spend a lot of time brainstorming creative ways of improving daily processes, and then having to sell those ideas (including your timeline, what resources you need, why you need them, why you think it's important, etc) to management. You will likely not have time to work on this during your work shifts (without your day to day work suffering) and will end up taking a lot of this home with you. If you succeed, great! If it doesn't then be prepared to be put on the back burner and periodically reminded your last idea didn't work when you are getting ready to propose a new one. To me it felt like every time I didn't succeed I was being held back for months until I proved myself again. It's all about selling yourself and showing proof/data - which can be difficult if you are not a big personality. Salary is on par or below (and by no means competitive with) the industry standard in Vancouver tech. Senior leadership will often try to justify this by reminding employees/prospects of other perks that come with the job like the vacation bonus, wellness bonus, etc. Middle management is currently trapped between a demanding (and disorganized) senior leadership team and unhappy employees. There can be a lot of confusion. Marketing, CS, and Dev teams are not aligned at all. Production moves at a glacial pace just because of all the politics and layers of management things need to go through. There can be a lot of aversion with accountability/ownership because everyone is just trying to stay on top of their own things without much thought into how they all need to work together. Turn over is at an all time high. Most of the employees in the header image in Glassdoor are no longer with the company. All but one of the founders of the company have taken a step back from everyday operations.

Pros

Great management team, positive and ultra competent crew, amazing new digs (not open space galore), willingness to constantly improve, genuine desire for work/life balance... the list goes on and on... It really is just the best place to work in Van.

Cons

Self-introspecting, exploring and experimenting are all necessary in a growing company, but also have downsides in the form of unclear directions and wasted efforts.
