Pros
The U.S. government is a good place to work. There is job security, good benefits (although dental is not great, be sure to get the supplemental insurance) and a good amount of time off. The Census is a pretty low-key job, I never have trouble asking for time off. You are pretty much guaranteed $69,000 after 3 years of working, since most divisions make sure you receive your annual grade increase without a problem.
Cons
Location: The Census Bureau is located in Suitland MD. Ghetto, MD. No matter where you live, the commute will be fairly long. Unless you like living in the ghetto. Promotions: Most positions here are competitive after GS-12. Having a graduate degree does not guarantee a managerial position. Actually I’d say it has little bearing. If you are management material, then it will help, but if you are not considered management materials, then a master’s will not help you. You have to be liked. They promote who is in the ‘club’. I consider myself to be liked by the club, so I may be promoted. All this may sound bad, but I think most work places are like this. Except that it is nearly impossible to fire or demote any incompetent workers.
