Graduate student has plenty of flexibility in terms of research. Faculties are very professional and are top-notched scientists and engineers in their fields.
Cons
Income for graduate student can be unstable, depending on how well your PI manage to get funding. It is usually not hard to find substitutions such as teaching assistant ship though.
