Huge unrealized potential, held back by ego and rigidity - Weather Forecaster UBIMET Employee Review

Pros

The team is about as good as it gets. Almost everyone gives their all, contributing good ideas every day. The atmosphere lends itself to feeding off each other's strengths, so if you have a weakness in a certain aspect of the job, you learn quickly. There's a lot of flexibility in the role. The scope for moving sideways is pretty big. You're expected to do more than just forecast, with a lot of emphasis on social media and product feedback. You gain a lot of transferrable skills. Ten hour shifts, working out to four days a week over the course of a month - so plenty of free time. There's a lot of flexibility in scheduling, as well as good vacation time. It's usually possible to take a full week off without having to use half that amount of vacation. The company has some very advanced proprietary technology that sets it apart in the weather industry. As a private weather company, there are very few restrictions holding back advancing the tech, so it's fun to see it advance so quickly. One of the CEO's is scientifically brilliant, and a genuinely nice guy. It's rare to come by a company where a CEO will go out for drinks a cheap bar with everyone. It's a good company to get experience in the industry.

Cons

UBIMET puts it's bottom line before employees, and is completely out of touch with the effect that has on workplace morale and motivation. The salary looks alright on paper, but as an effective amount for living in NYC, it's less than even the likes of AccuWeather. When asked about making changes to improve the situation, management will interchangeably quote the global situation and the local "small business" situation depending on what works best for them. It's hypocritical and everyone sees right through it. Benefits beyond vacation time are extremely average. Health, vision and dental are nothing special, and cost in the middle of the road. No 401k. No raise structure. Bonuses are included in the employment package but given the quoted "global situation", it appears that those will not be given out for the indefinite future. There is a worryingly high turnover of management. If a manager doesn't "align" with a very very rigid vision moving forward, there appears to be no hesitation to let them go. When the team was initially hired, we were all told that upward movement is easy to come by, given the effort by employee. This was wrong. There is absolutely no room for upward movement in the current status quo, regardless of how hard you work. While one of the CEO's is great, the other is primarily responsible for the rigidity and high management turnover. He comes across as the polar opposite of his partner, being pretty cold and very matter of fact. It has worked for the company up until recently, so credit where due, but it doesn't help the out of touch feeling between management and everyone else. This is not a company I would aim to pursue my long term career with.
