Pros

Steady 8-5 M-f Schedule. Great benefits Career mobility throughout the agency if you want it, or ability to spend most of your career in the same location if that is what you want. Layoffs are practically unheard of.

Cons

The biggest problem with TxDOT is it has the potential to be an example of efficiency, good stewardship of tax dollars and public trust, a model of what an ideal public sector agency should be, but a lot of times even when positive changes are implemented the execution is horrible. Either you hear rumors of a promising change taking place and 10 years later your still hearing the same rumors they pilot the idea people cry and management backs off, or you are flooded with a tsunami of major changes all at once with no transition what so ever and little or no feedback is acted on. I mean what's with the all or nothing mentality? I agree executive management should make the final decisions on major changes but what ever happened to a well thought out plan that keeps both old and new systems running in parallel until the new system can take over gracefully and take really good notes on lessons learned and for goodness sakes don't let the status quo paralyze you or don't tie half the major systems people are trying to use up in transaction all at once.
