Pros

There are definitely pros for working with Travelers company wide. Note: I was a field adjuster for 3 years. As an outside rep, you will get a very nice company car. Free gas, personal use of vehicle (at a premium, of course), health benefits, great PTO plan, and the opportunity to work remotely. Also, the training is great. Paid trip to a state of the art facility in Windsor Connecticut.

Cons

Travelers is a huge company. It's very black and white - sort of stuck in "a certain way of doing things". With that said, you are the lowest man on the totum pole. Chances are, your management has little to no interest in you as a person. They are consumed with Metrics. If you are new to adjusting, you will get buried with claims. It just happens. In my experience, there is no support. Everyone is too busy covering their own behinds to realize that the staff is struggling. Claims are tough, yet rewarding work. If you don't have management support, you'll go absolutely insane. Caviot: this is my experience in several offices throughout several states. If you don't care about work life balance, are okay with drinking the kool-aid of a company wearing unbreakable blinders, and don't mind striving to succeed for people who don't care about you, then you'll be okay.

Pros

We receive continuous training to stay up to date with new state regulations and market trends. My colleagues make the day go by quickly. The benefits are very reasonable. There is room for career growth if you know how to network. I appreciate their consistent push for community volunteer opportunities.

Cons

The personal lines department seems to be falling apart right now. Issues with the internal systems are resulting in underwriters doing multiple jobs and becoming a dumping ground for all agent issues even if they aren't underwriting related. I don't feel that the directors are truly expressing to the senior leadership team the impact that all these issues are having on the mental health and quality of life for the employees that are on the front lines trying to maintain a good reputation for the company. It's sad to see how quickly this department has gone downhill and the amount of quality underwriters that are jumping ship for different departments or different companies all together. What's even sadder it that no one with authority seems to care, or listen, when concerns are brought forth. I truly advise anyone considering applying for any position within the personal insurance department to hold off until things start to change - it's not worth the mental anguish that you'll experience.
