Pros
Tory Burch is a smart business woman. The majority of her employees are women. She celebrates women's issues. She gives back to the community through her Foundation which helps women entrepreneurs establish their businesses. Her company does well because she has made the right decisions along the way pertaining to growing her business and evolving her brand. She cares about the people who work for her. She is very involved in the day-to-day decision-making. It is important to her to have a say in and provide her approval for most of the product and creative concerns. Because she values the details, and she hires people who value the details, the product and brand have integrity. It is NOT a public company, which is good because we were not beholden to the stockholders and had more freedom to take risks on testing new ideas and more time to see where these go.
Cons
The company values collaboration. And Tory is very involved in the day-to-day. This can make it difficult to move things forward quickly. There is a lot of cross-functional "collaboration." Getting everyone's weigh-in is necessary and required, or there is a good chance the idea or project will get squashed before it has legs. This can permit others to cross boundaries with unwanted feedback. Due to the need for democratic approval and need for Tory's approval on most things, there is a lot of unnecessary spinning and indecision. Some individuals have a problem with surrendering their ego and accepting that they will not have full ownership over a decision or project.
