Crisis in Leadership Overshadows the Mission - Mid-management The Trevor Project Employee Review

Pros

Lots of brilliant, lovely people have worked there (and still do work there). The cause is socially relevant and timely. The org is definitely mission driven at its core.

Cons

There is a serious crisis of (and exodus of) leadership that was revealed, in part, by a series of events that precipitated the dramatic firing of Amit Paley in November 2022. There is far too much internal instability to get anything done frankly. As a mental health organization, it is sadly ironic that, at this time, working at Trevor is exceedingly bad for one's mental health.

Pros

The best management and team I ever worked with doing work I appreciated with a focus on a vulnerable population.

Cons

Due to their focus being on LGBTQ youth, they are unfortunately at the mercy of trends in both politics and in philanthropy. Several rounds of layoffs happened as fewer people have maintained their conviction to protect queer youth.

Pros

The mission is one that is important and life-saving. The direct service staff is amazingly passionate and empathetic.

Cons

Upper management is completely disconnected from the mission and the severe impact the work takes on the mental health of the direct service staff. They’re running the organization as a corporation and expecting the employees who actually communicate with young people on the lines, text, or chat to act like robots.
