Don't even walk in the door - Hair Stylist The Spa at River Ridge Employee Review

Pros

Stylists get $400 a year towards education classes. Hours are pretty flexible after you've been there for a while. Coworkers are trauma bonded so you gain some pretty solid friends. You get "Im scared everyone's about to quit" pizza parties.

Cons

This business used to be great, employees enjoyed coming to work and being around clients and their coworkers. Over the years that has slowly changed thanks to poor ownership and management (thanks to the owners). This business used to provide luxe salon experience as soon as you walked in the door. Now the first thing you are greeted with is the catholic religion via tacky, tasteless knickknacks and what is supposed to be the main purpose of the building (a high quality salon and spa) is secondary. All of the management that was worth anything has left thanks to the owners inability to adapt with the times, passive aggressive emails and general attitude toward employees, take constructive criticism and adjust, and as of late the incessant and absolutely draining need for micromanagement from the owners husband. Employees are miserable but never fret, the dryer is in optimum position in the lounge for efficient drying of towels and capes! Not to mention that no new hires for the management staff have happened or will happen. All responsibilities just keep getting pawned off on the girls that remain. If the Spa had an actual HR department this place would have the lights turned off. As far as the “hair program” new stylists don’t waste your time and efforts. The only thing the owner can teach you in your “classes” is how to give clients abysmal color and cuts that haven’t been updated since the 90’s. She mixes all of her clients color in the same bowl with the same brush without ever cleaning it out (yikes state board!) Bottom line, your only purpose is to do menial tasks that teach you nothing while you listen to her client conversations dragging the LQBTQ+ community, abortions, and political nonsense. Or if you’re really lucky, you’ll get sent outside to scrape goose poop off the sidewalk! Stylists have no say in the day to day issues that arise, you might have a meeting so you feel like you do but at the end of the day nothing you say resonates. If you like to feel off balance and never know what’s around the corner, this is the place for you! You might come to work one day to find you’re now expected to use a new color line you know nothing about and just wing it for a whole month before you get any kind of knowledge on it! But don’t worry, its “exclusive” so that makes up for it! Bottom line, keep looking for a place that actually values you and your skill set. You’re just a body behind a chair that they get to keep 60% of wages from to do god knows what with. Employees that have been here 10+ years have left with in the last couple months due to the absolute mess that is this business. It’s every man for themselves at this point and I will be absolutely shocked if the doors stay open or they’re not forced to downsize within the next couple years.

Pros

I built lifelong friendships that I will cherish forever! I always felt confident in my skills as a stylist but the upper level staff made me even more confident by helping coach and guide me. I miss this place dearly. The owner is absolutely wonderful!!! I cannot say enough good things about the Spa at RiverRidge. Every other job I have had since, has been compared to the standards set by this team!

Cons

There are no cons to working here.

Pros

The only good parts of working for this company were the friendships I made with colleagues and the employee discount on services and products.

Cons

The turnover of front desk workers is a joke. The staff is paid terribly, management sits on the butts in the back and doesn't work, and passive aggressive emails are sent to the staff on a regular basis. The service providers are treated like gold and the front desk staff is treated like dirt. Our time and energy was abused and the management was rude and unfair. If you want to be consistently yelled at by guests and management, given unfair standards compared to service providers, and not get any "thank you", this is the job for you. My best advice - move on and work somewhere else.
