Pros

I personally liked the physical labor in the garden department. Most the regular employees were very nice and I liked helping customers. I was there for 13 months.

Cons

You will never work as a full time employee. Ten to twenty hours a week are common. You will never get more than a .25 cent raise every 12 months. When you see your quarterly bonus check and then find out what your bosses get... you will feel very ill. The longer you are there and learn various duties, you will be asked to start doing dept. head duties and the heavy hands will push to see how much you will do.... all without the chance of a raise of more than .20 -.25 cents a year. They will also dangle the coveted full time status in front of you like a carrot on a stick. Nobody ever gets the carrot. I saw multiple full time positions open up and they always replaced the lost full time hours with multiple part timers. You will be used up until there is no more and then they will eventually find a way to make you want to leave. With the constant flow of new hires... you were never really anything but a number to them... a very small number. You will be terminated if a customer is having a bad day and complains hard enough about you... doesn't matter how long you have been there and doesn't matter if you successfully help thousands of customers every month and have a perfect no write up history. They will take the word of the customer every time... they have too. That directive comes from above store level. They will smile and lie to your face. Do yourself a favor... find another company to work for and save yourself the future stress.

Pros

The Home Depot has a solid moral compass. They aren't about sacrificing their ethics for the sake of a sale, which I love. They also hire a diverse group of people and give a lot back to the community. They offer a lot of benefits and little treats for their employees. Although they push their associates to meet quota, they're realistic about what can and can't be accomplished.

Cons

Home Depot has two different sides to it. Store associates and those of us considered "store support" who are payed by the vendors but work in the stores 100% of the time. I constantly hear about how store associates are stressed out by management and their hours are being rearranged a lot, cut, and they often are stretched thin due to lack of full staffing. "Store support" associates who do merchandising have it better than those who work in specific departments. However, you never really gain knowledge unless you have the time to look things up and read packaging.
