Pros

I felt supported from co-workers I shared shifts with. Unfortunately not from administration.

Cons

When I was hired, the organization was going through a period of transition. I was told the location where I applied and preferred to work was "opening in the next few months". Months went by, and the location still wasn't open. In the meantime, they assigned me to any location they needed coverage and my hours fluctuated from week to week. The lack of transparency, misinformation, and the stress that ensued from income fluctuations and increased cost of transportation resulted in me leaving altogether.

Pros

It can be rewarding to work with youth and see their progress. Depending on what is happening that day, the job can fluctuate between very busy one shift or literally sitting and doing nothing the next shift. Both types of shifts have their pros and cons. Co-workers in the YDS position are very supportive and look out for each other. Management takes the time to train YDS in a variety of ways and is open to feedback. They also are accessible and caring when you have a problem. This creates a comfortable and supportive environment overall. Good position to get your feet wet if or if you are considering getting a higher degree in Social Work Very possible to be promoted from this position once you have enough experience

Cons

The pay is pennies. They will stress that they are a non profit so they cannot pay a lot, but it's a little ridiculous when the youth who are 18 years old and don't have a college degree pick up a job in the community and make almost as much as you. Along with pay, management can be stingy with your timesheets and often make errors so it's necessary for YDS to constantly check and keep tabs on the hours they've worked. Turnover amongst co workers is very high. Burn out is prevalent. Reality is that the youth are difficult and they can often make you feel unappreciated The job is lonely. You work alone with the youth and usually only see other Staff members when clocking in or out. You are texted constantly to cover more and more shifts.
