Pros

The mission could not be more important, and the work on the ground is inspiring. GroundTruth’s super power - journalism’s super power, really - is that it catalyzes good in so many aspects, from governance and democracy to health, education, criminal justice, the environment- you name it. GroundTruth’s work is absolutely vital, and when you and your colleagues are focusing on that, it can be inspiring.

Cons

Day-to-day operations are, to be blunt, chaotic. Despite people’s good-faith efforts at doing good work, the operational needs of the org lack leadership, accountability, and know-how. This will improve under new CEO leadership, but there is a lot of room for improvement and until that’s met, staff are left to accomplish their work without the operational support you’d expect from an organization of its size and scale.

Pros

The team is increasingly diverse and fully dedicated to its mission, and there is a feeling of being part of a movement to save journalism and save democracy. The work feels important and the team feels inspired. There has been a lot of hard work around creating more diversity, equity and inclusion and an admirable attention by the whole team to a culture that allows people to feel like they belong.

Cons

The dramatic growth of this organization has definitely made it a place where people work hard, and are driven by their own sense of purpose but also by a leadership team that demands a lot. That can present challenges around burnout.
