Pros

Benefits, flexibility, variety of work projects

Cons

My partner died. Six weeks later after talking with HR, my supervisor, and the head of my department about the mental health issues I was having and asking to move forward with going on short-term disability (an option that had been presented to me a couple weeks prior and I had asked for time to consider it and was told that I could have it), I was told that while I "had the right and the ability" to do this through my insurance coverage, they didn't feel that my performance "was up to standard" and so they would be severing ties with me and would not be contributing their portion of the disability coverage. Which meant I didn't get the mental health care I desperately needed. I spiraled into a complete mental health crisis and two years later am only just starting to pull myself out of it although I obviously wasn't able to ever actually get any medical help for it and had to struggle to do it on my own since as a consequence of losing my job I could not afford any kind of care. I almost killed myself. Multiple times. It was a daily battle for months upon months just to continue living. I attempted to get copies of my communication with HR about the issues but my requests went completely ignored. Obviously, I was requesting these because everyone told me I had a serious and legitimate legal claim against the company, even being in a right to work state like Florida. If I hadn't been so completely suicidally depressed and struggling just to not be evicted from my house because I had no income and instead had been in a mental state capable to actually function like a human being, I probably would have pursued it more aggressively. But alas. I had bigger issues to deal with like survival.

Pros

You have sustainable hours for construction but there is mandatory overtime (The most I’ve done is 51 hours in a week), they pay you enough to live on, it’s good experience, upper management pays lip service to workers rights, there is genuine concern and regulation from management to provide you an emotionally and physically safe place to work, you’re never really rushed to do your job, and you do have the right to stop work

Cons

You need a degree in engineering or geology to move up and you have to threaten to move offices or take another job to get a pay raise. It’s not unionized.
