Pros

I really enjoyed my time working for Sullivan. Like any other job, there are pros and cons, but I feel that this job is rewarding and offers great experience. The managers and lead tutors were very respectful and always willing to help. I worked for Sullivan part-time while I was going to school. It was great because I was able to set my own hours depending on my school schedule. There was no formal interview. I was referred for the position by another tutor, and the manager gave a brief interview over the phone. There were basic questions that included: "What would you bring to the company?", "How do you feel about going to the student's houses?", etc. At first, having to go to the student's houses was very unfamiliar, but the families were always very accommodating. As a way to show their appreciation, some parents provided me meals and small gifts. I always knew what was expected of me. Sullivan was strict in being very detail oriented when it was time to complete paperwork. They made this job easy by providing EVERYTHING. They gave you the curriculum, student books, pencils, and notecards. The pay was good, considering everything that I was doing. I would definitely recommend this job for students. It also is very beneficial if you are bilingual.

Cons

You will most likely be tutoring students K-6. A lot of these students are behind in their grades reading level and at times it will be difficult meeting weekly goals in improving their skills. If you are committed in their success, then this won't be a problem. Commuting was sometimes difficult, but they compensated for gas. The training was long (7+ hours), but necessary for you to understand your duties. Initially trying to get a hold of parents and arranging for sessions. Once they know you, it gets much easier. Communication between lead tutors and management was sometimes off, but nothing too serious. Not much room for growth.

Pros

Flexible schedule, lesson plans already made.

Cons

Although they tried to cluster children in the same neighborhoods so you wouldn't be driving across town, sometimes there were some children that were pretty far. You did have the option to decline though.

Pros

Flexible schedule, good pay, loved seeing students gradually improved, and really make a difference.

Cons

Sometimes parents will cancel without notifying tutors, tutors do not get paid when parents cancel. It can be time-consuming to drive to a parents' home just to have a session cancel. The supervisor does not address the tutor's concern when needed.
