Pros

There is a knowledge bank from editorial and some of the sales employees about the industry that can enable you to get a deeper understanding of the sector if it’s the renewable sector that you’re interested in. Some departments such as editorial and programme get to travel to events overseas but this happens anywhere that operates globally. If you are interviewing here the only acceptable divisions are upstream and editorial. Everything else is a farce. You will still be stressed though it’s hard not to be seeing what goes on all around you.

Cons

Where to start, this company is so poorly structured with poor or non existent senior management. The ‘CEO’ lives overseas and hardly is ever there making him out of touch with not only what is happening in the office but much of the European market he presides over. Nepotism is out of control here with the MD being the owners son and although he seems to be a nice person fundamentally, he is too inexperienced for this role. Unable to managing difficult characters as well as not having a thorough knowledge of the market. As a result he is ineffective in handling staff issues, poor management style from other senior management and any project decision making on budgets etc Importantly for the business he is unable to deal with the constant fire fighting happening across the many failing events the company runs. With no true leadership or sector knowledge coming from the people employees should be able to look to for direction, the result is a high stress and finger pointing environment. Life really is too short to choose to work in an environment like this. If you’re talented work elsewhere truly.

Pros

A monthly salary and minimum benefits are something I can thnk of. Nothing else.

Cons

I joined the company in 2023, but a total of about 27 people (according to a year-end company meeting) were hired in the same year. This company had about 50-something employees, so you can tell how high the turnover was. The solar industry is complex and is gaining traction worldwide. However, Solar Media did not offer adequate training to equip employees with knowledge about the industry. Instead, the CEO just asked the employees to read the news online. Although employees should take the initiative to self-learn (no one would disagree with that), the employer is expected to offer training and materials to employees so that they can learn and grow. Unfortunately, it's just the employees' fault for not knowing the industry well. It's understandable that some employees struggled and decided to leave in just a few months of time. From an employee perspective, aside from the salary, they could hardly learn/take from this company. I also understand there are many people who work mainly, if not only, for the pay slip. However, there are also many companies that expect their employees to hit the ground running. The job market always has capable candidates, but Solar Media needs to significantly increase the remuneration package in order to attract them. If this company does not want to pay, it can hire people with little experience and fire them later if they cannot help its business. That's what Solar Media has been doing.
