Pros

There weren't many pros to working at this salon other than the people I worked with when I first started in 2012. Once we got new management, everything went down hill from there. Yes, you tan for free, and yes, you get a pretty fair discount on products. Other than that, its all cons.

Cons

Oh, the cons...where to begin? This company is all about money. I highly doubt they could tell you the name of five of their employees if asked. They only care about the ones who make them the most money and sell the most products. The training program for this salon is beyond anything I've ever had to do. First, you're given about a ten pound handbook that you have to memorize WORD FOR WORD. They do not allow you to improv with clients or get to know them on a personal level. They expect you to speak like chipper, upbeat, Valley school girls and if you don't they tell you you just aren't cut out for sales. If you aren't on your game 150% of the time, your hours get cut and you eventually get fired because you didn't do enough for them. The clients were usually very patient with me, but I would often go off record and use my own "script" and hit the highlights of the 600 points of sale we needed to know from training. If you have any kind of issue, don't go to management or the owner. They could literally care less about what you think or your opinion or your problems for that matter. I cannot stress enough how much this company disappointed me. My hours were awesome in the beginning, I just did "bed cleaning" which is pretty much slavery. As a bed cleaner/helper you are basically expected to do ALL the dirty work that the sales girls don't want to do. They sit on their butts and pretend to be selling things all the while I was running around the salon cleaning every dirty bed and washing towels and folding laundry and taking the trash out and working my you know what off. It felt so demeaning and I felt so disrespected as a helper. Just because I don't speak like a cheerleader on crack doesn't mean I don't have good sales techniques. I can't begin to tell you how many clients came up to me saying "you're the only one I've ever seen doing anything around here" or "you really bust your butt for this place." The only reason I stayed at this company was my clients and because I needed a job. I would come to work, fake a smile, do my job, and leave. But I never truly felt respected, needed, or wanted in that salon. They don't recognize how hard we work for them and again, if you aren't making them money, they could care less about you. You are replaceable. The turnover this company has blows my mind. Clients were always noticing it and asking me where sew and sew was, did this person get fired? It was almost embarrassing to have to lie to customers regularly and tell them this employee just wasn't available at the time. All in all, if you can't tell, my experience at Solar was horrible and I would not recommend this job to my worst enemy.

Pros

It is a real sales job, so if you can deal with the extremely high standards of multitasking: ie detailing, cleaning, bed maintainence, auditing and membership and product knowledge; it does look good on your resume. You have the opportunity to network yourself to clients when you build your rapport- so if sales isn't quite for you, there may be someone who can hook you up elsewhere, but don't count on it.

Cons

A good amount of fines are delegated in this company! They take it out of you commissions, normally 5 bucks for a mistake. When all is said and done, even in busy season, you can make about 4% of what you bring in the company. A lot is expected of you for a very minimal payment. Management and the owner are both sales pros and know how to pay very little for their high expectations, but make it seem as though all is fair. The smart ones realize this and leave- creating an extremely high turnover rate. Membership sales need to be explained carefully- there are tons of customer service issues with the way it's explained. Overall it feels like a labor camp sometimes. There are days at some locations where you don't have a chance to eat and you don't ever really stop moving for long hours. You are expected to have a checklist complete by the end of the night- sometimes you will be at the store for and hour or more.
