Pros

Good benefits and great co-workers

Cons

Unfortunately, my experience at Sift was not as positive as I had hoped. Despite claiming to be people-first, the upper management is disorganized and there is a lack of empowerment for managers below them. This leads to a lot of micromanaging and a lack of trust in employees. The company places too much emphasis on yearly goals and planning, which can be frustrating since more is being planned than can be completed. The managers below the upper management lack experience and seem to be simply implementing directives rather than having the autonomy to lead their teams effectively. Another significant issue at Sift is the large amount of tech debt that has not been addressed. The main code repository is a mono-repo, and it takes an unnecessarily long time to deploy code due to outdated systems. This makes it difficult for employees to work efficiently and effectively, which is frustrating. It's worth mentioning that Sift seems to be undergoing an identity crisis, as evidenced by the recent firing of several C-level executives. This has caused uncertainty and instability within the company, and it's unclear how the leadership changes will impact the direction of the company in the long term. Overall, while there are some positive aspects of working at Sift, my experience has been overshadowed by the lack of trust, micromanagement, C-level turmoil, and outdated systems. It's disappointing that the company's people-first approach is not reflected in the day-to-day reality of working here.

Thank you for sharing your feedback about your experience at Sift. We appreciate your insights and want to address your concerns. We value the positive aspects you mentioned, such as good benefits and great co-workers. However, we acknowledge your disappointment with certain aspects of our management and systems. We are committed to being a people-first organization, and we take your feedback about upper management seriously. We understand the importance of empowerment and trust in creating a healthy work environment. We will continue to develop our management team to ensure that they have the autonomy and support needed to lead their teams effectively. Regarding our planning and goal-setting processes, we understand the need for balance and realistic expectations. We appreciate your input on re-evaluating the level of detail and focusing on short-term commitments. As always, specific examples you could share with R&D leadership would be appreciated. We acknowledge the issue of tech debt and outdated systems. While all organizations have tech debt to some extent, we have made significant efforts over the past few years to address this challenge. We have implemented various initiatives to improve our codebase and deployment processes. However, we recognize that there is still work to be done, and your feedback will help us prioritize our efforts and continue our progress in this area. The recent leadership changes have undoubtedly caused uncertainty, and we recognize the impact it may have had on the overall atmosphere within the company. We are committed to providing clear communication and stability during times of transition. We will take your feedback into account as we navigate these changes and ensure that our long-term direction remains focused and clear. Your advice to management regarding tech debt, "People First" policy, and planning is well-received. We appreciate your suggestions and will take steps to address these areas. We do send out quarterly surveys with comments that we can segment by department, if you are not comfortable speaking with People Ops confidentially, this would be a great avenue to share specific examples. Thank you for sharing your advice and concerns. We genuinely value your input as we strive to create a positive work environment and in our quest to “Start with the customer” by delivering delightful products and experiences. If you have any further suggestions or would like to discuss your feedback in more detail, please feel free to reach out. Best regards, Liz Kosinski Chief People Officer, Sift
