Pros

Some of the brightest and best software developers you're ever likely to work with work at Semmle. It's a meritocracy: if you're keen and smart you'll have a chance to significantly influence the products. Everyone just gets on with each other. There are no petty office politics. The work is always interesting and I always have a large Jira backlog so I know I'm never going to be stuck for things to do. The working environment is excellent. We're right in the middle of Oxford in a beautiful, spacious office. We're never hampered by not having adequate software or hardware to work with, which can be so annoying at some companies. Free snacks and drinks. Great coffee!

Cons

I'm struggling to think of some - really! Sometimes the air con is set ridiculously high and I have to work with 2 jumpers on to stay warm when it's lovely and warm outside. Semmle aren't the highest payers around: you could earn more money elsewhere, but you probably wouldn't enjoy coming to work so much.

Pros

- Has an actually exciting and compelling product that solves some real-world problems. - Company is filled with especially smart people, it's difficult not to learn at an incredible rate working there. - Extremely technical company. - The company culture is very respectful, and there is very little ego present, throughout the company. It's easy to speak to anyone from any team about any work (regardless of discipline)

Cons

- Due to the size of the company, it is often the case that it feels like there is too much work that each individual has on their plate.

Pros

I've worked with Semmle for several years now, and have seen it grow quite rapidly. As a university spin-out, the founders' background is highly academic, and this is reflected in the culture and style. There is a strong emphasis on autonomy, but there's usually someone around who can provide pointers for almost any problem we face. The expansion of the engineering team has allowed us to work on some things that have been talked about for a long time, and it's exciting seeing those plans come to fruition. There's a buzz of activity in the office that's quite infectious. Almost everyone has the opportunity to be involved with customers face-to-face, which often involves travel. That's a great perk, certainly for a while. Also, the office itself is feels like one of the greatest working spaces in central Oxford. Honestly, it couldn't be any more central. Snacks and drinks are greatly appreciated!

Cons

There always seem to be more tasks than we have time for, and sometimes priorities can change at relatively short notice. I understand that's sometimes inevitable, but I hope we can find ways to mitigate it as we grow the team.
