Scientific American

Is this your company?

Great history at this magazine, but not much going on for it in the present. - Senior Marketing Manager Scientific American Employee Review

Pros

Fairly decent work environment, great history and there are a few smart people here.

Cons

No real upward mobility, no opportunities to learn, not open to change or growth. Promotions based on personal allegiances and biases, not on merit or experience.

Pros

Hybrid work schedule. Smart, mostly hardworking people. New editor-in-chief has a strategy.

Cons

Cannot stress enough how negative the business outlook is. And as a second class citizen of the parent company Springer Nature there is really nowhere for you to go if and when this subsidiary publication goes the way of the dodo and/or additional layoffs are needed to survive. It's a crowded space in a shrinking market (see Popular Science, New Scientist, Science News, American Scientist, for example) and the product is poorly differentiated with several politically related embarrassments to its name. It enjoys a modicum of the respect and attention it once did in the age before social media.
