Pros
Much of the work with the public is really fun--chance to wow kids with science. Lots of opportunities for creativity in program and exhibit development. Lots of cool geeky events to work and enjoy. Coworkers are creative, talented, and fun to be around, for the most part.
Cons
Growth opportunities are few, salaries are low, and visitor-facing areas have a major lack of resources, particularly in terms of staff. Staff are seldom recognized or rewarded for good work. Promotions are mostly about who you know, not your accomplishments. Staff reductions have a severe negative impact, forcing many to do the job of 2-3 people with no recognition of this effort.
