Pros
I really enjoyed my time working at SOLS, the freedom to design relevant community projects is great, and the communities worked in really appreciate the service you provide. Getting to live and work so closely with another culture is really interesting! I got to meet some amazing, adventurous people and probably had one of the most challenging and exciting years of my life. The English programme is largely effective, and people enjoy learning with it. Despite the issues detailed below, I would still highly recommend this role!
Cons
There are some issues with management. There was a lot of restructuring during my time there, and it felt like many people were pushed out because of personal issues rather than legitimate professional reasons. They also fail to provide necessary support to some staff in remote areas doing a difficult job. A lot of people dropped out before their contracts ended and head office tended to push the blame onto these people rather than addressing their legitimate concerns. Often chaotic management detracted from the considerable good work being done by the NGO. As other reviews mentioned, the living conditions might not be luxurious, but this isn't a problem for everyone.
