Pros
One real positive is the work–life balance. If you need to step out for an appointment, you can usually make up the time later. There's also some impressive clients to work with plus a lovely office in the centre of Bedford Town Centre.
Cons
The biggest disappointment is how different the reality is compared to the image the company sells through LinkedIn posts and job adverts. It used to be a supportive and exciting place to work but over time it's changed. Management don’t take accountability. Feedback is asked for through regular work buzz surveys and 1-2-1's with your line manager, which is commendable. However, any issues raised are not followed through on and nothing changes. When people leave, staff are left to deal with the fallout while leadership carry on as if everything’s fine. Instead of addressing real problems, the focus is always on our external image but the day-to-day reality doesn’t match. Money has been cut back heavily. Bonuses have been withheld, staff training budgets paused and our summer team building day cancelled and moved to our local park for free. At the same time, a big wave of people left this summer and most of their jobs haven’t been replaced, which just means more work for the people still here. The workload is spread thin and people are clearly struggling. Progression is another sore point. The “skills matrix” that’s supposed to support pay rises and promotions is changed so often it feels like the your goals are constantly moving. You can meet every target you’re set, and still be handed a whole new list at the next appraisal. It’s demoralising and makes people feel like they’re never good enough, no matter how hard they work. Flexible working is promoted in the job ads, but staff are monitored for their attendance through key fobs. These were originally introduced supposedly for “health and safety” but that’s not true. Managers will call you out if you’re not in on your allocated office days. Over time, more and more staff have become fully remote leaving the office half empty and the policy feeling unfair. The atmosphere has gone downhill. When I first joined, there was a great sense of community, but now it feels like a completely different place. Most of the faces I started with have gone, replaced by new hires who don’t stay long. Turnover is so high that very few of the original team are still around.
