Pros

The family atmosphere of this medium sized (100 employee) design-build manufacturing company means that there is a feeling of relaxation and acceptance here that other companies of this size don't have. Though very well established and recognized in the industry, the company never went "corporate". You can miss days here and there for family needs without anyone erupting at you, dress casually even in the office, and if you break your knee while bowling with the family on Friday night the company will pay for your recovery and leave from work with full pay and benefits for the 5 months it takes you to recover (this really happened to one of our Designers a few years ago). Because each project and client is so unique, the company's engineering group also makes innovation a priority on every project, so as an Engineer or Designer you will never get bored. In 80 years of doing business RMF Steel has NEVER laid off a single employee, despite slow economic growth or downright market crashes - even the most humble employee has been secure. RMF also encourages and supports work\life balance. As a family company they are a family-oriented company, so you won't miss birthdays, holidays, tee-ball games, etc., because of work (unless you want to).

Cons

Because the company is privately owned, and never went "corporate" in mindset and structure, it is also not "corporate" from the standpoint of pay and benefits. You can expect to make 10-15% less for your position than you would at Ford or Honeywell. That said, you also don't have the work load, strictures, or looming possibility of lay-offs and downsizing those companies routinely experience. The other major con would be the entrenchment of some of the senior staff: being older they are resistant to changes in procedure, regardless of their obvious and proven benefits.

Pros

Family owned, local company started in 1943. Makes industrial food processing equipment. Great people to work with, HUGE machine shop, talented and hardworking machinists. Excellent 3D design. Pretty much leave you alone to get your work done, and lots of flexibility within your job

Cons

So....how to describe RMF. I was not there for very long, about 3 weeks, but it was enough to see that they hire people when they need to get work done, and then if it gets slow: BYE! There is a core group of about 10 people who have been there for like....35 years, who will never leave and are all they need to handle the base workload. They will TELL you that you could be there till you retire, but that will not happen. Turns out they laid off three guys just the year before I got there, and then another one about six months after I left, because they ran out of work. They claim they want to grow, but are unwilling to invest in the people and talent to make it happen. Other companies in the area are about 10 times bigger and have only been around for 20 years, because they are willing to take risks to grow. RMF will never do this. It's could be a good place to get your feet under you or learn new skills, but you should be looking for your next thing as soon as you're hired.
