Pros

RH is growing quickly, your experience will depend on your leader and their ability to navigate this change. Because of this quick growth you will have the opportunity to participate in a lot of different projects and gain experience. RH does promote from within.

Cons

There is a lot of turn over at RH, I didn't notice it at first but after six months you begin to notice how different the company around you looks. You begin to think that won't be me but when you decide to leave, you realize you survived RH. One of the metaphors you will hear is that RH is climbing the luxury mountain, and it is. But your role is the sherpa in delivering value to shareholders, your wellbeing does not matter nor does having kids because you are replaceable. RH does not have a leadership culture, you'll find very little guidance or mentorship on how to lead well (check Restonet, the RH intranet, there's no resources). RH emphasizes on moving fast but not necessarily on moving thoughtfully. There is little room for contemplation on what to do better. Leaders are often very stressed and have little room to lead because staffing is stretched so thin. Lastly, it's shocking to write this but I have to agree that RH has a cultish culture. At first when you onboard, you will experience love-bombing, very friendly behavior, lots of encouragement as though you will be the person to change the direction of your area and without you it just wouldn't be possible. You will begin attending values meeting, where people will begin to express their adoration for Gary's words (the CEO) as though they were gospel, you will read his words daily in these meetings for a week, maybe even two weeks, to dissect the meaning of his words and be encouraged to express your gratitude for his leadership and wisdom, there is never feedback or disagreement. Then you will/may get treated badly by an executive, yelling or screaming at you, your leader will not intervene or say that that's against RH values. You will begin to hear about the poor performance of your colleagues and you will be shocked but you won't be sure why you feel shocked. You'll try to take time to attend a birthday or celebration but you won't be able to, there's just no time and you're needed too much, don't have kids and work at RH - it's very very hard. You will notice there is no time to spend with your family/friends because you are working days/nights/weekends. Suddenly you will notice your co-workers looking and speaking to you differently. Someone tells you that your "leader" has begun telling others how you're letting down the team. You begin to question, is this normal? Then you attend a values meeting and you hear your colleagues being available for 2a phone calls on their vacations and SVPs expressing how grateful they are that you're not taking time off even if you want to during Covid-19 to take care of yourself. You feel guilty for feeling tired and begin to work harder. Your leader begins yelling at you weekly. You decide to quit and suddenly your colleagues won't talk to you, you're not invited to meetings because this of the "love us or leave us" value and you no longer love RH so you need to get out pronto. That is the cult of RH and a very strange place.

Pros

One of the strongest aspects of this role is the autonomy. I’m trusted to make decisions that genuinely support the customer experience without constant approval from leadership. If I believe an exchange plus a $250 gift card is the right solution to preserve a relationship, I’m empowered to do that. That level of trust creates confidence and allows us to move quickly when issues arise. Leadership is accessible when needed, especially in escalated situations. I’ve never felt left alone to manage something beyond my scope. There is also regular voluntary overtime available, which is a plus for those looking to increase their hours. For someone transitioning from another industry, the environment feels more structured and brand-focused, which has been refreshing

Cons

The clientele can be challenging. Some customers assume that spending thousands of dollars entitles them to treat frontline employees disrespectfully, even when those employees had no involvement in the original issue. It can also be frustrating to hold a boundary with a customer, only to see it reversed after escalation. While I understand the desire to preserve relationships, it can unintentionally undermine employee confidence and consistency in standards. Because RH carries so many collections and product variations, the learning curve is steep. Customers often expect immediate, detailed product knowledge, which takes time to develop.
