Cons

I previously worked in the Health and Safety department at this company and feel it is important to share my experience for others considering employment there. During my time in the department, the leadership environment was extremely difficult. The leadership in this department frequently spoke to employees in a manner that many of us experienced as verbally aggressive and unprofessional. Raised voices, profanity, and public criticism of staff were not uncommon. Over time, this created a very tense and uncomfortable workplace atmosphere. The culture in the department became increasingly stressful. Many employees appeared discouraged and several colleagues spoke openly about wanting to transfer out of the department or leave the company entirely. It was not unusual to hear people discussing plans to look for other jobs simply to get away from the environment. Another concern was the difficulty the department seemed to have filling and retaining leadership positions. Roles remained open for extended periods of time and there appeared to be ongoing challenges attracting or keeping people in those positions. From an employee perspective, it often felt as though the work itself was not the issue, but rather the leadership environment that people were expected to work under. What made the situation particularly challenging was the sense that employees were hesitant to raise concerns internally. Many people worried that speaking up about leadership behavior could negatively impact their job security or future opportunities. When employees feel they cannot safely report issues, it creates an environment where problems can continue. Eventually I submitted a formal statement to Human Resources documenting the concerns I experienced. An internal investigation later took place. However, the same pattern of behavior in this department is still ongoing. My hope in sharing this review is that leadership continues to take workplace culture seriously and ensures employees are treated with professionalism and respect. There are many hardworking and dedicated employees at this company who care deeply about their work. They deserve an environment where they feel supported and able to do their jobs without fear of being spoken to in a degrading or hostile way.
