Pros
- This job will force you to learn fast and on your own. - Many developers are very nice and will answer most of your questions.
Cons
- Company structure is very old school. - They prey on software developers directly out of college as a way to hire those who have no experience with a well structured company (this allows them to practice non-common work place practices). - Software development best practices such as Scrum are no where to be seen. - Some upper level developers (also in management) are rude and have unrealistic expectations. - You will be expected to travel across the country with sometimes no warning for weeks at a time. - Travel amount will vary, but can easily become 50% of the year. - Pay is subpar for newly employed software developers, expect below the average pay for the area. - Gratitude for going above and beyond or providing exceptional work is basically nonexistent. - On work trips, expect to work upwards of 10-12 hours a day with no overtime pay. - Finally, the company makes you feel as though you are “a part of the family” and you don’t want to let the team down, to a point that they shame previous employees who decided to leave the company. This becomes a mental blocker for employees to not want to leave the company so that they don’t let the team down.
