Management has created a culture where everything feels like a competition between regional leaders to improve rankings and earn bonuses. Unfortunately, that pressure trickles down to therapists, who are constantly pushed to increase group therapy, not because it’s always what’s best for patients, but because it improves productivity metrics. Even when therapists are already providing a significant amount of group therapy, the expectation is to do more simply because another region is outperforming yours. Healthcare should be about providing the best patient care, not competing on a leaderboard. Patients are people, not productivity statistics. The benefits are also disappointing and have been a common complaint for years, yet little has changed. At the same time, expectations continue to increase despite ongoing technology issues. The computers and iPads frequently malfunction or are unavailable, but productivity standards never adjust to account for lost time. Employees are expected to meet unrealistic expectations regardless of whether the tools they need to do their jobs are actually working. The company would benefit from focusing less on internal competition and more on supporting the clinicians who provide patient care every day. Better benefits, reliable technology, and realistic productivity expectations would go much further toward improving employee morale and retentIon.
