Carpenter reveals - Associate Portland State University Employee Review

Pros

Sadly there just aren’t any Pros because of gross disrespect from management to the tradesmen.

Cons

Management is disrespectful and quick to anger. There is constant conflict and tension. University tradesmen such as the carpenters have witnessed management stealing tools from them and HR sadly does nothing. There is a high turnover of employees which speaks volumes…as a career you are stunted with no opportunity for advancement. The hourly pay is not possible for the cost of living in Portland so you better already have money to supplement living. You also have to pay for parking and management does not pay for parking. Parking cost $1000. Per year so you pay to come to work.

Pros

It's a really great opportunity to get up and learn to teach your own class rather than just working with a professor as a TA. Really comprehensive and rewarding experience.

Cons

The pay is unlivable unless you're not paying rent. The contract is 15 hours a week, but obviously if you're just starting to teach as a GA, you put in WAY more than 15 hours of work. If you come up against a problem, there is very little oversight or support.
