A Difficult, But Important, Job Done Slightly Better Than One Might Expect - Independent Study Teacher Pathways In Education Employee Review

Pros

Serves an underserved community with an essential service Lots of branded, high-quality swag (which does serve an important marketing purpose when it comes to the student population) Staff is mostly great people that care about their jobs and the students Most of the grading for these positions is done on the clock, so you don't have to take your work home with you in the same way as other teachers.

Cons

There are times when the stress of the job can get to everyone. This leads to some frustrations on the bureaucratic level and from senior leadership at times. The job can be dangerous at times, and it just IS stressful. That's the nature of the job. I guess another con then would be compensation. You make less than a CPS teacher doing a harder job. You take your work home with you anyway, just in different ways.

Pros

They give you lots of free Pathways shirts. Students for the most part don't have their cell phones on them during their study time. You get a whole hour for lunch but you work year round and stay until 4 pm.

Cons

At Pathways, it's all about the data. If your students aren't making progress even though they are chronically absent or show up a couple hours late, it's your fault. Lots of meetings. Only their so-called small group instruction teachers and the SpEd teachers are actually doing any teaching. The so-called Independent Studies teachers, which are the bulk of the staff, are shuffling papers and are glorified case managers trying to coax more "units" out of their students. Their online curriculum is horrible. School year is year round. Teachers might get one week for summer break.
