Pros
Co-workers are smart, kind, hard-working and fun. My direct manager was amazing: Clear about what the job entailed, helpful when things ran off course, devoted to the company as well as its staff. Though pay was low, the benefits are pretty generous. The Human Resources staff is awesome! Very helpful, even with complex or difficult questions on quick turnaround. HR director Lisa Mayo is very kind and very professional. The best HR exec I’ve ever encountered.
In a dwindling print-media environment, Pamplin offers one of the few opportunities in town to continue working at a newspaper (actually, more than 20 papers). Company is privately owned by a local businessman rather than a media chain.
Cons
Occasional layoffs, high turnover in ad dept. Editorial staffing seems solid. People in news are seasoned pros and they stick around.
