It is an opportunity to work hands-on with animals, and actually receive some health benefits (this is not always the case with animal related jobs). It is a great place to grow personally and gain experience for future career growth.

It is a labor of love, not pay. If you want to work with animals, do not expect great pay no matter where you work. The zoo field in general can also be very hard on life outside of work. The animals don't take breaks, so holidays and weekends are a must. Be prepared for nights and weekends too.
