Pros

Easy to start a career

Cons

Working here was one of the worst professional experiences I’ve had. The directors foster a toxic environment and show absolutely no care for the employees. Excessive hours with no rest days or proper payment are the norm. Any small mistake is exaggerated and publicly exposed to colleagues in the most unprofessional and rude manner imaginable. Instead of valuing their team, the directors constantly try to undermine employees, making them feel unworthy of even the bare minimum they provide. They prioritize chasing new clients and projects at all costs, completely disregarding the wellbeing of their staff. Overwhelmed employees are left unsupported, expected to take on impossible workloads with no guidance or recognition. If you’re not desperate, do not work for this company. And if you’re a potential client, I strongly urge you to avoid them. They treat their employees and contractors with such disrespect that it inevitably impacts the quality of their work. Choose wisely – your career or project deserves better.

Pros

Working at Ocean Science Consulting Ltd. (OSC) is a genuinely rewarding experience. As lead of the finance team, I have had opportunity to observe the organisation from both strategic and operational perspectives, and I can say without hesitation that OSC exemplifies what a well-run scientific consultancy should be. The company is built on a foundation of scientific integrity, operational precision and a strong sense of purpose. The team is composed of highly capable individuals who are not only experts in their respective fields but also deeply committed to the company’s mission. There is a clear emphasis on quality, accountability, and continuous improvement, which permeates every aspect of the business. From a financial standpoint, OSC is exceptionally well-managed by the two original founding Directors, who returned to helm in 2025, They ensure that processes are robust, reporting is clear, and decision-making is both data-driven and pragmatic. The new leadership team they brought with them maintains a strong focus on sustainability and long-term value, which makes my role both challenging and fulfilling. What stands out most, however, is the culture. It is ethical, collaborative, respectful, and intellectually rigorous. There is no tolerance for complacency, yet the environment remains supportive and inclusive. Staff are encouraged to contribute meaningfully, and their efforts are recognised appropriately. In short, OSC is a company that delivers on its promises. It is a place where high standards are not just expected but achieved, and where professional growth is both supported and celebrated. I would recommend it without reservation to anyone seeking a career in marine science or scientific consultancy.

Pros

You will rapidly learn that you deserve better from an employer. The company turnover rate means you will very quickly establish a network of contacts in other companies across the sector.

Cons

It's not so much that the company is a rudderless ship, rather that the Directors seem intent on wilfully steering the ship towards every rock, reef, and jagged coastline in sight. Rudderless would be an improvement. The staff consists almost exclusively of an ever-changing roster of either fresh graduates, or others trying to break into the industry. The company then frequently tenders for work which their employees lack the experience and expertise to deliver effectively. Consequently, they company seems to be in a perpetual state of either an existing project disaster, or heading towards the next one. The Directors take zero accountability for their decisions, actions, or for their company as a whole. They respond to the chaos they create by leaving their undervalued staff rescue every situation without any support. Sadly, the Directors never walk so far away as to risk losing the ability to fire abuse, blame, and criticism at their employees at every opportunity. The concept of a 'no-blame culture' only extends to the Directors themselves - everyone else is very much in the firing line. This would be bad enough if expectations were in anyway reasonable or sensible, but they rarely are. Instead, you'll spend a disproportionate amount of your time pandering to the Directors' narcissism and egotism, or suffering their astounding ignorance. All of this results in an average staff retention period most appropriately measured in days, weeks, or months... but certainly not years. Save yourself the trauma and look elsewhere. What you stand to gain from OSC will not be worth the cost.
