Pros

Work from home, good people, neat product

Cons

Micromanaged aggressively, no systematic or effective operations leadership, questionable ethics when it comes to outsourcing and email marketing, zero promotion of work life balance: slacked on weekends, evenings, early mornings, holidays. Toxic culture all around. Five executive level turnovers in less than sixth months. Intentionally sets unreachable goals and then the CEO gets frustrated when you don’t hit those goals.

Thank you for taking the time to write out your thoughts. We just completed our first employee engagement survey and have clear steps to take to improve in some areas while maintaining what people love about working here. We're not perfect, but we're listening. Although critical feedback like this can be hard to take in, it's often the most important kind, and I am grateful for it. As an early stage and fully remote company, we find ourselves in ever-changing and often ambiguous situations. We have ambitious and challenging goals because we believe it's what the world needs. And we are still a small team where each person has a tremendous impact on the growth and direction of our business. The pace of a fast-growing startup is certainly different from the pace of a large and established company, and as such, we recognize that our culture is not for everybody. We do believe in work-life balance--being effective during work hours so that you can completely unplug at nights and on the weekends. Sometimes urgent things do come up, because we are a 24/7 resource for millions of students and educators. and they depend on us. No team member should shoulder that burden alone, and we are working on expanding the team to ease these growing pains. We are truly grateful for your contributions and take your feedback to heart as we go forward.

Pros

I really enjoyed my first two years at Numerade. The team was talented, collaborative, and genuinely passionate about improving education. There was a strong sense of ownership, and I had the opportunity to work on meaningful products. It was a great environment for growth.

Cons

Over time, leadership changes significantly impacted the culture. The CEO became increasingly involved in day to day decisions, leading to a more micromanaged environment. There was a noticeable lack of stability on the product side. At one point, around 8 product managers turned over within 10 months, with some leaving after only a month. This created inconsistency in direction and made it difficult for teams to build momentum. But also speaks to how difficult it was to work for this leadership. It often felt like decisions were top down, with limited room for team input. It was more of a “my way or the highway” approach from the CEO. In contrast, the CTO demonstrated stronger leadership qualities, with a more thoughtful and team oriented approach.
