Pros

Tier 4 pension if you're old. No pros if you are young.

Cons

NYS pays less than the private sector, offers less remote time, and cannot even be bothered to provide parking. The hiring process is idiotic: You submit a cover letter and resume, then they want you to complete an agency application regurgitating information that is on your resume, and then they want you to complete a NYS application regurgitating information that is on your resume and the first stupid form they had you fill out. Do you remember the percentage breakdown for work tasks for a part-time job you had a decade ago that is completely unrelated to the job you are applying for? I hope so because NYS wants to know! Do you have the contact information for supervisors at a part-time job you worked at over a decade ago even though they have likely moved on or died? I hope so because NYS wants to know! Who do they think is willing to jump through all these hoops for a job? By the time they get back to you, you could have a job in the private sector.

Pros

Great benefits, solid pension, and, depending on what level you are working at, consistent work. For people who find meaning and purpose in working in service to the public, this is an excellent place for you.

Cons

The higher up you are the worse the pay is comparative to the amount of work you do. The barriers of bureaucracy get in the way of the “do good” intentions of many.
