Pros

5.5 years to top pay better than other agencies Over time, night diff, uniform allowance, holiday pay, longevity and service pay Free or low cost medical insurance best in nyc metro area and surrounding counties (no premiums) 20 years retirement with full benefits Line of Duty Injury if approved all surgery, medical and therapy expenses covered After 5.5 years 25 vacation days plus 2 personal days Unlimited Sick Leave Taking the civil service test and getting to the rank of SGT, LT and Captain Staying past 20 years every 5 years gets you increments Every five years, you get free Bullet Resistant Vest You can take free or low cost law enforcement courses in person or online Many discounts are available through the respective union’s website and becoming member of your local fop.

Cons

Micromanagement Toxicity Extreme Stress Low quality of life Time away from family Mandatory over time on regular days and days off Incompetent Supervisors Nepotism Favoritism Discretionary promotions of Detective Specialist, Detective Investigators and Detective third/second/first grades After the rank of Captain all other ranks (Deputy Inspector, Inspector, Deputy Chief etc) is discretionary and whoever knows you and likes you. Same goes for SGT Special Assignment & SGT Detective Squad. LT Special Assignment & LT Detective Squad Commander. Discipline is used for minor things, coercion and intimidation SGT, LT and Cap lack’s personality, management and leadership skills You pretty much need a “phone call” “hook” “crane” for anything and everything unless you have superhuman extraordinary skills. Everything is about numbers, even though on paper there is no quota in reality there is always one. Politics, Corruption and Bribery is rampant

Pros

I get real exposure to how the criminal justice system operates day to day, especially through tasks like reviewing case files and assisting with reports. A supportive environment makes even simple responsibilities more valuable because I’m learning from people who genuinely want to see me succeed.

Cons

A lot of the work can be repetitive, like filing, data entry, or organizing documents. You have limited decision-making power since most responsibilities are support-based. Some tasks may feel disconnected from the bigger picture if you’re not actively trying to learn. The environment can feel strict and rigid because of rules, procedures, and confidentiality requirements

Pros

The job itself isn't that bad. It is very repetitive. Could always ask the person next to you for help if you're unsure about a situation. It is fulfilling because you are constantly helping people.

Cons

Felt like salvery working 12-16 hour days and expecting to be back "fully charged" just to do another 12-16 hour shift. Honestly feels like you never leave that place. OT everyday and sometimes they won't even tell you until right before you're supposed to leave. Needing to get a doctors note to get out of overtime is not fair. Having to pay $10-$50 for copay just to get a doctors note each time is wild. The pay doesn't add up to the amount of work you do. Majority of the supervisors have a nasty attitude and don't really want to help you. Some even refuse to put their names on some jobs and make you do it for them. If you are going through something, the majority of supervisors and principles would judge you, won't want to understand your situation, and would make it harder for you. Not all, but most will really make you feel like you aren't doing good enough.
