White-dominant culture hiring in-network for all senior positions - Program Assistant NRDC Employee Review

Pros

Good cause Great, long-suffering BIPOC staff in the lower-rung steps doing the work of senior management with no compensation

Cons

- Talks a great game about DEI, does nothing about promoting BIPOC staff. - No upward mobility for PAs. PAs of color have many more people to support than white PAs. Nearly all PAs are female and treated like the help, unless they are related to some senior staff or donor. - Internships go to children of donors first and then trickle down to one or two qualified candidates - Program heads are nearly all white and from the same network of friends and family. Only the president role has a diverse candidate but no president lasts because upper management is toxic and working to actively disempower him/her. - Many in HR just want to stay in favor of upper management and brush gross violations under the rug which leads to ex-employee lawsuits. - Like others said in the reviews, drives out people of color in droves. Can't keep a single black attorney because of the toxic culture.

Cons

very large organization spread out across the country can make collaboration difficult, large siloed departments and "too many cooks in the kitchen" can make moving work forward difficult
