Pros

Lots of great people work for Memorial Hermann. Pay is competitive; although you are NEVER informed about the potential pay range. (More on this later) Lots of internal opportunities; easy to change position if in good standing. (i.e. satisfactory annual review and no "written" warnings. (More later) 401K matches at 100% of 6% of your salary; no longer offer pension.

Cons

As 7 year employee I’ve changed roles a few times, these are my observations. - The only comprehensible training offered was the initial training as a new nurse. Although it may be easy to transfer to a different job, obtaining sufficient education or training in the role has been nonexistent. Due to the practice of hiring from within and "training on-the-job", the quality & validity of the information you gain is based solely on the information provided by the preceptor/trainer whom most often was also transferred from bedside to the new position. This practice unfortunately promotes a great deal of internal incompetence, old ideas, and rigidity of progress and change. Other than tuition assistance, Memorial Hermann does not invest much in employee training/education. Most 1st & 2nd level department heads are unqualified internal transfers, in positions to recycle outdated information, prove unwavering loyalty, and enforce Memorial Hermann’s strict budgets. (Associate degreed Directors, Non-Nurse educated Bachelors degree holder as a Area Vice Presidents (AVP’s) and leader over nursing positions) - Pay—Negotiate wisely upfront or push be be informed!!!!! Memorial Hermann uses the practice of not disclosing their salary ranges to their advantage. If you are simply offered more than you currently make, that may seem like a great opportunity. It’s typical that you may later learn how devaluing the offer was when someone with much less knowledge or experience makes a lot more than you. To ensure that you have the ability to negotiate and are compensated fairly and not simply offered the minimum amount to win you over, you MUST HAVE the pay range for the position.

Pros

Quality care. Patient focused. Room for growth depending on skill but sometimes based on who you know which is a con. Lots of great providers who really care.

Cons

A lot of politics and favortism. People get promoted in leadership that don't deserve it which makes for a miserable experience for those working with them . Some senior leaders are disrespectful, overly demanding, disregard others time and effort, manipulative, aggressive, belittling, don't understand the workload of others, inflict punishment based on their feelings or because they want to, do things for their own benefit and are dishonest.
