Pros

What's so amazing about working at Meijer is that visiting other Meijer's, you'll really notice how different the culture is compared to the one you work at. That being, as you understand the customers you interact with, many of them can be very pleasing to help. Depending on the department you work in, your customers may be regulars you often see. This unacknowledged relationship can be fun for the customer as they feel comfortable seeing you again and even better for you as you may understand their intentions. Once in awhile you may actually receive encouragement from management on your work and what you have done well. Pay raises are based on the amount of hours you put in, not friendship or favoritism. I get to enjoy working with others in my department and look forward to the tasks I set up for myself.

Cons

Many customers, especially older ones, feel highly entitled. Some even spend most of their life at Meijer, but at the same time will utterly tear you down more than the work you do does. You're supposed to get these appreciation cards when you do something pretty extraordinary. This could be a customer reaching out to the service desk, thanking them for your service. While technically you're supposed to get this card (to be later used for prizes), you often won't. Meanwhile, managers in other departments can be friendly and will toss them out like nothing to people who do inadequate jobs. You don't get paid for how hard you work or the right things you do. You will be overwhelmed by the tasks you are expected to do; you will be untrained in the things customers expect you to be able to accomplish; you will be overworked until you are absolutely unable to work and still be paid as minimal as possible. Meijer's #1 goal is to achieve the lowest pay for all employees as much as possible. Minimum wage goes up and you've earned .50 cents through pay raises? Yeah sorry, any progress is lost when minimum wage goes up. You're expected to accomplish way more than anyone ever can, you have to accomplish numerous tasks throughout the day that are alone in themselves highly time consuming, you must also interact with every single customer you can even if it's not possible, you must accept being walked over like the trash they make you feel like everyday. Not last but as much as I want to say, you will enter a 3-4 month honey moon period, where things feel nice. This ends shortly after.

Pros

Direct coworkers were great to work with. I also enjoyed being left to do my work and not babysat by management.

Cons

Management doesn't know what they are doing. Resets and floor plans were regularly not done properly. The store I worked at has a skeleton crew so I never got help (but was expected to stop everything I'm going to go help other departments/areas). Also meaning good luck to any customers needing help, especially when I was the only person working my area of the store, so when I wasn't there, no one was. Management also regularly disappeared into the offices or were on vacation. Also was terminated for reasons outside my control even though I was told they look at the reasons for attendance incidents before termination. Never got to get the FMLA or accommodation to my doctors before being terminated two days after I requested them. Didn't bother asking for a raise either. I did multiple times and got nothing.
