Pros

It's probably close to shutting down because of clueless ineffectual management that knew nothing about ecommerce but wanted to think they knew everything about the world because in a former life they sold imprints of 'classics' to Barnes and Noble". Nobody got in before 10am and everyone left at 5pm on the dot!

Cons

This family owned business was dedicated to the literary world and scraping content on the internet was the best way for them to sell books (they thought). The fired anyone and everyone who came in knowing marketing, pr, SEO, the internet and generally something about what they were trying to do. Pros

I've learned a lot working at Mediander. It's a company that values its employees in ways that are rare in the startup world, and it's a testimony to the high quality of life the company promotes that there are people here who have been happily working with Fine Creative Media for many years. Intelligent, driven individuals with interesting ideas can go really far here, which I think is evident in that the original content on the site really shines and is polished in a way that is far outside of the capabilities of most other sites. The office in Chelsea is a great place to work from, too--there's a small terrace with a view of downtown, which makes for amazing lunch breaks. There are sweet informal company institutions like bagel Thursdays and happy hours, and the benefits are great--the health insurance is good (including dental!), there's a transitcheck program, there are summer fridays and a generous PTO system. Places like this are hard to find.

Cons

The site is still establishing its following and sometimes company strategy shifts can affect day-to-day workflow, but I think that's fairly normal at this stage in a site's development. And sometimes meetings can get off-track.
