Pros

My immediate line manager was kind, supportive and tried her best, but she was always overwhelmed by the work environment and extremely micromanaged. Opportunities to help participants on a personal level, though this was often despite -not because of - company systems.

Cons

No meaningful accommodations for neurodivergent or disabled staff. Requests for reasonable adjustments took months or were dismissed entirely. Management showed little empathy and rigidly enforced policies that excluded those needing flexibility, including parents and staff with mental health needs. Strict office mandates, even for admin work that could have been done remotely. Staff were shamed for asking to work from home. Culture of secrecy and fear - employees discouraged or punished for sharing information or raising concerns. Nepotism and favouritism were common, with unqualified individuals promoted or protected. Widespread unprofessional behaviour: inappropriate comments, noisy and disrespectful office environment, loud music and poor boundaries. Complaints or disclosures were not taken seriously; those who spoke up were often made to feel uncomfortable or cornered. Poor curriculum quality and refusal by management to take feedback from experienced staff, and certain coaches favoured over others. Coaching job was similar to being a teacher in an academy- No agency, and a lot of micromanaging down to whether you can photocopy something for participants.

Cons

Not too many - a few misunderstanding s about training classes and roles but overall, not bad.

Pros

Had a few really exceptional coworkers

Cons

One reason I was hired was to bring in new ideas and work approaches; however, when I tried implementing anything new, some of the “old school higher-ups” would balk and were never open to anything new or better. My management just looked the other way and didn’t support me. As for training, I wasn’t offered much in the way of onboarding other than being told to read a lengthy “standard operating procedures” document. No real opportunities were offered to shadow anyone so I could learn in real-time. A typical work week was 60+ hours and often stretched to 70+. It was exhausting and demoralizing. The job was not sustainable and I’ve never been more relieved to be done with a place. I cannot recommend Maximus as a place to grow your skills or to give your time. Turnover seems to be relatively high at Maximus and there are far better places to work.
